Jacquemus Does it Again! His Latest Show, Titled “La Montagne” Features Bold Colours and Silhouettes

Updated: Jan 25, 2023

Within the first second of the show, the scene was set; La Montagne was an obvious choice for the name, as it was clear the collection was inspired by mountain gear. Virtually, the show began in a vibrant tent which was unzipped to reveal the setting. I, however, couldn’t help but be slightly underwhelmed by the venue. I liked that the runway was held in a circular setting, yet, the blue walls and bright green floor weren’t nearly as elegant as I was expecting.

The first look, an oat-coloured matching jacket and trousers, was again, underwhelming… Apart from the gorgeous bright orange bag that accompanied it. Still, I had hope. Luckily, the classic Jacquemus design features that we have all grown to know and love appeared with new elements and silhouettes. These classics included his strong incorporation of cutouts, strappy details, and lingerie-inspired pieces, specifically in the women’s garments. These powerful features had been renewed with bold colours, specifically pink, orange, and blue, as well as mountain equipment-styled details. They worked beautifully together, to create a cohesive collection fueled by never-seen-before inspirations.

The Fall/Winter 2021/22 show for both men and womenswear included a total of 60 looks but lacked in the men’s department. Although both incorporated the hiking/mountain details - drawstrings at the bottom of trousers, hiking boots, climbing carabiners, and heavy-duty bag straps - the menswear just could not live up to the exquisite detail he put into the womenswear.

The oats and beiges of the garments transitioned smoothly into pink and red before moving into deeper tones of black and khaki. A soft blue was used with pops of yellow between the khaki and deeper browns with pops of orange, before closing the show with black.

I believe the colours work tremendously with the theme Simon Porte Jacquemus, founder and designer for the fashion label, was going for. He said “chic mountain climbing” and fully committed, with cropped puffers, windbreakers, backpacks, and balaclavas. Another notable piece throughout the show happened to be the socks with sandals that many of the models were sporting for womenswear. Now, I am not an advocate for socks and sandals, but it just worked with this collection by providing a cozy and comfortable footwear alternative, in case you weren’t into wearing hiking boots with everything.

As WGSN reported back in April, floral prints are going to be big for this autumn/winter season and Jacquemus will be one of many to incorporate florals into a few of his pieces. Look 47 was one of my favourites, with a tan cropped floral button-up and oversized trousers. Additionally, the look featured a bra-type garment (I’m really not quite sure what it is, but I like it) that many of his womenswear looks had.

As the final look strutted down the runway, it took a minute to realize that it was the finale. At first, I thought to myself that it wasn’t quite showstopping enough to close the show, but after watching the model take a lap of the circular runway, I decided that I really liked the monochromatic look… In fact, she looked really good.

As the models took their final walk around the circular venue, applaud could be seen throughout the audience. The transition of colours could be seen for all its glory as the models filtered through the opening and into the large space.

To conclude the show, Simon Porte Jacquemus ran out, gave the crowd a thumbs up, which I personally adored, and ran off as the screen faded to black and the Jacquemus logo appeared in white.
