As the warmer months slowly start to encroach on winter, so does my urge to start shopping for summer. And although I tell myself I definitely don’t need anything new, I always find myself wanting after something. Specifically, bags. If you, like me, need an excuse to buy a new bag this summer, here are 5 bags you need for the warmer months.

Oversized Bags
Designers took ‘bigger is better’ to the extreme for summer. Vivetta Ponti designed shoulder bags almost as big as the models in pastel pink, blue, and taupe for her Vivetta Spring 2023 collection while Louis Vuitton put their own spin on the bag. Instead of creating new and larger silhouettes, it was almost as if they took smaller ones and enlarged them along with the logo. Bottega Veneta, Proenza Schouler, and Alexander McQueen were just a few more embracing the supersized trend.

Silver Bags
Whilst Alexander McQueen embraced the oversized bag, designer Sarah Burton combined the trend with another very popular trend this summer—silver—to create the it bag of the season. Altuzarra took a different approach, plastering their signature shoulder bag, the ‘Parka’, with the metallic. Opting for a smaller size didn’t mean they scrimped on detail. In fact, the small but mighty bag was designed with an abundance of handy pockets and stitching down the side.

Clutches
Before you donate or sell your Bottega Veneta pouch, they’re on their way back this summer, in an impressive way. Gone are the days of the boring clutch, as Dries van Noten showed sequined, satin-ruffled, and crocheted handhelds. And while the Belgian designer opted for an array of shapes and textures, Fendi stuck with their classic Fendi First clutch that first debuted in their Fall 2021 collection. Primarily playing with colour, the bag was shown in neon green, cognac, and sage patent leather and fur. Jonathan Simkhai took a different approach to the clutch, designing a gold oyster shell-shaped purse that—unlike other brands—was sturdy and compact. Whether you’re a soft pouch clutched under the arm or a compact metal purse gripped between your fingers kind of person, this trend includes something for everyone.

Denim Bags
If you’ve been paying any attention to fashion in recent months, you’ll know that denim has made a huge resurgence… And I don’t just mean jeans. You can pretty much find a denim version of anything you could possibly want. Denim corset? Check. Denim boots? Check. Denim handbag? Double check. Givenchy dressed Bella Hadid in a distressed darker wash denim bra, midi skirt, and matching oversized shoulder bag. Diesel, known for their denim, incorporated the fabric into all of their bag styles, from large to small. Even the Altuzarra ‘Parka’ bag that came in a silver metallic finish took to the runway in a denim version.

Business Bags
The 9-to-5 tote is back, and better than ever. Gone are the days when the Louis Vuitton Neverfull was seen as out of fashion. Whether you prefer a tote or a more structured bag, there’s no better time to buy a bag that fits everything and the kitchen sink. Prada showed soft leather totes and Re-Edition 1995 structured bags in an array of colours, all perfect for the office. Tory Burch had the same idea, designing top-handle bags with a zipper from side to side, emulating that of a briefcase. A very chic briefcase. At last, there are a ton of options for those travelling to work in style.
As we head into summer, these 5 bag trends are the perfect way to elevate your wardrobe. Whether you choose brand new or pre-loved, they will serve as an investment, with their versatility and trendiness.
