Heads Turned at the Miu Miu SS22 Showcase, as Low-Rise Micro-Mini Skirts Adorned the Runway

Updated: Jan 25, 2023

Miu Miu sent shockwaves through the fashion industry, reintroducing the low-rise micro-mini of the early 2000s to the modern runway. What most are deciding is a complete horror, I don't completely hate. In fact, the micro-mini has rapidly grown on me, but that's not to say that I will be wearing one anytime soon.

To be honest, I've never really had an opinion on Miu Miu, it just kind of existed in the shadows of Prada, Miuccia Prada's preponderant label. Therefore, I never really paid any attention to their collections... Until now. Within mere minutes of the debut of the SS22 collection titled 'Basic Instincts,' premiering this past Tuesday at Paris Fashion Week (PFW), my Instagram feed was an endless scroll of micro-minis. At first, I looked at them in the same horror that most still do. I mean, imagine sitting bare cheek on the bus or train (or anywhere in public). Sorry for that image. And for that matter, doing virtually anything. One wrong move and you're flashing the public something they definitely don't need to see.

In spite of my previous sentiment, I have to say that they are unusual, in a good way. Sure, they didn't need to be 5 inches short, but they were this incredibly elevated version of the early 2000s denim mini's that the likes of Christina Aguilera and Nicole Richie were seen sporting. I just love when a trend is brought back and is actually better than its predecessor. The elevated business wear took hold of the runway and provided a glorious juxtaposition with risqué lengths of garments in predominantly business wear silhouettes. Not to mention the raw hems, which brought a sense of destroying the old office attire norms and replacing them with, literally, chopped and cropped versions. It was almost as if Miu Miu had become a rebellious teen that was set on breaking school uniform dress codes or a 20-something making a scene the day she decided to quit her corporate job... I love it.

The details of the skirts were so intricate and one of the main reasons why I am so in love with the runway looks. Instead of bringing the low-rise mini skirt back with simple designs nodding to the early 2000s version, the trend was elevated with the use of thick belts, inner pockets poking out of the bottom, and of course, the Miu Miu boxer waistband on show at the top of the skirt. The way the skirts were styled with different pieces throughout the show also worked in their favour, displaying the versatility of said garment.

Might I add that I didn't see a single backside as I watched the runway show, and trust me, my eyes were peeled, but, if you're considering the trend and want a more PG version, I suggest wearing a long and oversized button-up shirt and tucking it into the skirt. The bottom of the shirt would hang out of the bottom of the skirt and cover more skin. This way, you're still trying out the trend, but you're not as conscious of how much skin is showing. Alternatively, opting for a similar style of skirt with a few more inches of fabric could do you wonders.

And, finally, to those saying that this trend will only look good on one type of woman, you are categorically mistaken. I understand that not everything works for everyone, but I believe that if you want to wear something and you feel confident in it, you will look absolutely unreal. So, the argument that only skinny, 6ft supermodels can rock the low-rise micro-mini skirt is just insulting. It might've been featured on those types of models on the runway, but that's not to say that it won't work for any other body type. Period.

While you probably won't see me strutting around town in one, although you never know (wink), I am beyond eager to see how the trend evolves into the spring/summer season.
