A few weeks ago, I made the irrational and frankly bizarre decision to purchase a pair of black fishnet tights. I was styling a fashion editorial for school and for some reason, I thought that they would go with the theme... They did not. After getting home from the mall, I had immediately decided that I should not have purchased these tights under any circumstance, after all, fishnets aren't even in style. I grabbed the receipt, with dread creeping in the back of my mind, as I read the words "Hosiery is Final Sale", printed on the back. All that kept going through my mind was: "Oh my God, I can't believe I bought fishnets!" The funny thing is, a stray thought entered my head, leading me to believe that there was a possibility I could wear them and pretend they were in.
Last Tuesday, Chanel debuted its Cruise 2021/22 collection in the South of France and I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the models strutting through the Carrières de Lumières in fishnet tights. You can imagine my astonishment when almost 40 of the 66 looks incorporated the punk-esque tights. It got me thinking, had fishnets come back in and I just hadn't realized?

After some digging, I noticed that fishnets had become a trend throughout the Spring/Summer 2021 runways, but not as tights. Instead, the open mesh fabric was seen as dresses, skirts, and tops by designers such as Longchamp, Dries Van Noten, and Valentino. These spring and summer designs, however, had a looser weave and looked more effortless and beachy, rather than the punk fishnet tights that I had regrettably bought.
Pierpaolo Piccioli of Valentino had been integrating fishnets throughout his Spring/Summer 2021 and Fall/Winter 2021/22 collections and went from the lighter fishnet dresses and skirts to a thicker and heavier netting in turtlenecks and jackets. He even had it printed on knit sweaters which added warmth to the usually airy fabric. Although no fishnet tights could be found on the runway, this collection was alluding to the direction fishnets were going to take in the coming seasons, specifically cruise and resort wear.

On Tuesday, I tuned into the live stream of the runway show and as if Virginie Viard of Chanel had heard my pleads for fishnet tights to come back in style, those of black and white graced the elegant resort collection. The juxtaposition of the punk tights and black eye makeup with the feminine silhouettes and soft prints created a spectacular fusion of style. Finally, I thought to myself, fishnet tights are back.
Now, am I still skeptical as to whether I can pull them off? Yes, yes I am. Still, I find myself quite interested in the punk meets feminine combination Chanel brought to the forefront of 2021/22 resort wear. Regardless of my past disdain for my choice of hosiery, you may find me sporting fishnet tights, after all, they are in.
