"Father, Son, and House of Gucci." Several Thoughts I Had While Watching the Trailer

Updated: Jan 25, 2023

By now, you should've watched the House of Gucci trailer, debuting on July 29th, a thousand times... At least. And if not, run, don't walk. The movie, directed by Ridley Scott and based upon the scandal surrounding the marriage and divorce of Patrizia Reggiani and Maurizio Gucci, has fashion fanatics like myself practically drooling after the two-minute trailer.

Lady Gaga as Patrizia Reggiani could not have been cast better. She not only closely resembles Gucci's former wife, but holds an incredible on-screen presence. Sure, there are many huge names in the film, but my eyes were for Gaga, and Gaga alone... Just give her the Oscar now. Maybe that's why it took me a little longer to notice Jared Leto, but as soon as I did, I hit pause so quickly. That's Jared Leto? That's not Jared Leto. That's Jared Leto. I mean, he is known for his insane transformations, but either way, that pink suit is not "chic."

The standout look of the trailer, in my opinion, was the belted white strapless lace dress with a matching jacket, which closely parallels her wedding dress. Yet, you can't forget the red satin evening gown, spotted briefly, that bears a similar resemblance to the Fall 1987 Chanel dress that Patrizia Reggiani wore in pink back in the 80s. Not to mention the white halter top bedazzled with small pearls... Iconic.

Still, if we're speaking on all of the House of Gucci fashion we've seen so far, including paparazzi shots and social media posts, Gaga's look from her Instagram post back in March has to take the cake. Just the white fur hat and jewelry alone are enough for me. Plus, I'm a sucker for a good turtleneck, sue me.

Now, although I'm very much here for the fashion, I love a good murder. I mean, that sounds a tad morbid, but seriously, I just love anything, especially a true story, about murder. And for that matter, what's better than mixing fashion and murder? Not much in my opinion. When the tone of the music changed and flashes of scandal, betrayal, and my personal favourite, murder, appear on screen, I couldn't help but find myself down a very deep Wikipedia wormhole... What can I say? I want to know every little detail. But, if you still don't know where the story takes a turn for the worse, essentially, Patrizia hired a hitman to kill her ex-husband Maurizio Gucci in March of 1995. The theory is that her motive was fuelled by jealousy, and of course, money.

Even though I do love a good episode of Dateline every now and again, I have to say that an incredibly filmed, directed and scored blockbuster movie just makes it a little more interesting in my books. Substantially when there are such powerful lines, like "Father, Son, and House of Gucci." When Gaga said that, I almost fell off my chair. Literally. The DRAMA, I thought to myself. Another line worth mentioning is, "I don't consider myself to be a particularly ethical person, but I am fair." Jaw on the floor. Yes, maybe I'm being dramatic, or maybe I'm just goo goo for Gaga. Either way, you can't deny that those taps of the spoon on the side of the espresso cup weren't chilling.

Still, it's a long wait until the movie premieres in theatres in November, so, until then, catch me Googling anything and everything about the Gucci family and Maurizio's murder whilst simultaneously watching any documentary I can get my hands on.
